haryana(india): In an unexpected twist at the Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat, competing in the fiercely contested 50-kg category, faced disqualification by a mere 100 grams during the weigh-in on Wednesday morning. The heartbreak of missing out on the finals didn’t dim her spirit, nor has it diminished the pride of her home state.

Despite the unforeseen outcome, the Haryana government is preparing a grand reception for the wrestling superstar. On Thursday, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini made a heartfelt announcement, declaring that Vinesh Phogat—who was on the brink of making history as the first Indian woman to qualify for an Olympic wrestling final—will be celebrated and honored just like any medalist.

“Haryana’s valiant daughter, Vinesh Phogat, showcased a stellar performance at the Olympics and fought her way to the finals. Though circumstances kept her from competing in the final match, she remains a champion in our hearts. Our government has decided to honor her as we do a medalist. Vinesh will be recognized at par with a bronze medal winner. The same rewards and facilities awarded to a bronze medalist will be extended to her. We are immensely proud of you, Vinesh,” Saini expressed on ‘X’.

According to Haryana’s sports policy, Olympic gold medalists receive Rs. 6 crore, silver medalists Rs. 4 crore, and bronze medal winners Rs. 2.5 crore. Phogat, despite the disqualification, will receive the full honors due to a bronze medalist.

In the wake of these events, the 29-year-old Vinesh Phogat has announced her retirement from wrestling, marking the end of an illustrious career that has inspired countless young athletes.
