4G Coverage: The Department of Telecom (DoT) introduces the Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) service, enabling Jio, Airtel, and BSNL users to access 4G services across networks, improving connectivity, especially in rural areas

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has unveiled the Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) service, allowing Jio, Airtel, and BSNL subscribers to access 4G services across different networks. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity, particularly in rural and remote regions.

Traditionally, users could only connect through towers operated by their specific telecom service provider (TSP). With the implementation of ICR, customers can now utilize towers funded by the Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN), ensuring seamless connectivity even when their provider's tower is out of range.

This development is part of a broader set of telecom initiatives introduced by Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, which also includes the Sanchaar Sathi mobile application and the National Broadband Mission 2.0.

By leveraging shared infrastructure, TSPs can reduce operational expenditures while providing uninterrupted services to customers, even in isolated locales. According to DoT data, this strategy will extend 4G coverage to over 35,400 villages nationwide, utilizing approximately 27,000 DBN-funded towers.

Minister Scindia emphasized the significance of the ICR facility, highlighting its role in offering rural populations the flexibility to select networks and access superior services. He noted that the collaboration among major telecom entities—BSNL, Airtel, and Jio—capitalizes on shared infrastructure at DBN-funded sites, thereby enhancing telecom services for millions across the nation.

The DBN, established under the Telecommunications Act of 2023, is a government initiative designed to bolster connectivity and make it more affordable for residents in remote areas. While the ICR service currently applies only to DBN-supported towers, there is potential for expansion as more sites are incorporated into this program.
