Arvind Kejriwal, while addressing his party members on Sunday, declared his intent to resign. The Delhi Chief Minister is scheduled to meet Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at 4:30 PM on Tuesday, with speculation rife that he will submit his resignation. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has informed PTI that Kejriwal sought this meeting, aiming to formalize his departure from office.
The L-G has confirmed the appointment for 4:30 PM on Tuesday.
In a dramatic declaration, Kejriwal said during his Sunday address, “I am resigning in two days. Ask the people whether I am honest. I will not sit in the CM’s chair until they give me a certificate of honesty. I want to take an agnipariksha after leaving jail,” the 54-year-old leader passionately proclaimed.
This revelation comes just two days after his release from Tihar Jail, following a bail granted by the Supreme Court in a corruption case linked to Delhi’s excise policy. The case, filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has put immense pressure on Kejriwal’s administration.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have had several critical meetings in recent months.
Saurabh Bharadwaj, Delhi’s minister, confirmed that the AAP’s legislative party would soon convene to elect a new leader who will assume the chief minister's position. “Whoever gets elected will present their claim to the President through the L-G. All our MLAs are united, and the process should wrap up within a week,” Bharadwaj told ANI.
Despite the political turmoil, Kejriwal’s faith in the people remains steadfast. “Even after everything the Bharatiya Janata Party has done over the last two years, he believes that the people of Delhi will re-elect him,” the AAP leader asserted.
