India is gearing up to launch its first hydrogen-powered train, a big leap toward clean and eco-friendly transport. The train recently cleared a key trial and is expected to start service by March 31, 2025.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video of the train on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a milestone in India’s green mobility journey.
A Global First for India
With this launch, India will become the fifth country to run hydrogen-fuelled trains, after Germany, France, Sweden, and China. The train will operate on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana, covering 89 km at speeds of up to 110 km/h.

The project supports India’s long-term target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and puts the country among global leaders in sustainable rail technology.
