Uttarakhand Police have arrested a man for posing as Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah, chairman of the International Cricket Council, and demanding Rs 5 lakh from a local BJP MLA. As per the police, two more people were identified for their involvement with accused Priyanshu Pant, out of which one was taken into custody and the other is currently on the run.

In a statement, Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Pramod Singh Dobal said Pant, 19, was arrested in Delhi on Monday, while Uvesh Ahmed was caught in Rudrapur in the hill state’s Udham Singh Nagar district.

A search operation is on for Gaurav Nath, Dobal added.

Besides demanding Rs 5 lakh from Adesh Chauhan, the BJP MLA from Haridwar’s Ranipur, the three accused also attempted to extort money from Nainital MLA Sarita Arya and Rudrapur MLA Shiv Arora by promising to make them ministers, the top police officer said.

According to information, Chauhan received a call from an unknown number on Sunday evening and the caller identified himself as Jay Shah. The caller asked for a Rs 5 lakh donation to the party fund.

When Chauhan expressed his doubts, the caller threatened to defame him on social media if he did not pay the money.

Immediately after the call, the legislator’s public relations officer lodged a complaint, based on which the police launched a probe.

Dobal said that police teams tracked the mobile phone’s CDR, IMEI numbers, and locations. After raiding several locations in Ghaziabad and Delhi, Pant was arrested in Delhi with the mobile used in the crime.

During interrogation, Pant confessed that the three of them planned to extort money from the MLAs to lead a luxurious life.
