The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to announce Delhi's new Chief Minister on February 19, following a crucial meeting of its legislative party. According to sources, the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for February 20, marking a historic moment as the BJP returns to power in the national capital after a gap of 27 years. The party secured a decisive victory in the recently concluded Delhi Assembly elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) managed to secure only 22 seats.

BJP’s Return to Power in Delhi

The BJP’s landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly elections has reshaped the political landscape of the capital. The party’s triumph ended AAP’s decade-long dominance, with key AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Saurabh Bharadwaj, losing their strongholds. The BJP’s success is seen as a reflection of the electorate’s desire for change and a strong endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Selection Process for Delhi’s New CM

With no Chief Ministerial face announced before the elections, the BJP has been engaged in intense deliberations to select the right candidate for the top post. Sources reveal that out of the 48 newly elected BJP legislators, 15 names have been shortlisted. From this pool, nine leaders will be chosen for key positions, including the Chief Minister, state cabinet ministers, and the Speaker of the Assembly.

Frontrunners for the CM Post

Several prominent BJP leaders are in contention for the Chief Minister’s role. Among them, Parvesh Verma has emerged as a strong candidate. Verma, who defeated AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in the high-stakes New Delhi constituency, is being hailed as a “giant killer.” When asked about his potential candidacy, Verma expressed his willingness to accept any decision made by the party high command, stating, “I'm a spiritual man. So I don't get too happy and I don't get too sad either. Whatever the party high command decides, I'll accept that happily.”

Other notable contenders include:

  • Vijender Gupta: Former Delhi BJP chief and a seasoned leader.
  • Satish Upadhyay: A senior BJP leader and prominent Brahmin face.
  • Ashish Sood: General Secretary of Delhi BJP and a key Punjabi face in the party.
  • Jitendra Mahajan: Known for his strong rapport with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

High-Profile Meetings and Decision-Making

Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from the US, the BJP has held a series of high-profile meetings to finalize the leadership for Delhi. The party’s central leadership, including Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President J.P. Nadda, has been actively involved in the decision-making process. The selection of the Chief Minister is expected to balance regional, caste, and community considerations while ensuring effective governance.

Swearing-In Ceremony on February 20

The swearing-in ceremony for Delhi’s new Chief Minister and the state cabinet is scheduled for February 20. The event will mark the official beginning of the BJP’s governance in Delhi after nearly three decades. The party’s focus is expected to be on addressing key issues such as infrastructure development, pollution control, and improving public services.

Challenges Ahead for the New Government

While the BJP’s victory is a significant achievement, the new government will face several challenges. These include managing the expectations of a diverse electorate, addressing Delhi’s persistent issues like air pollution and traffic congestion, and ensuring effective coordination with the central government. The selection of a capable and dynamic Chief Minister will be crucial in navigating these challenges and delivering on the party’s promises.

Conclusion

The BJP’s return to power in Delhi marks a new chapter in the capital’s political history. With the announcement of the new Chief Minister expected on February 19 and the swearing-in ceremony set for February 20, all eyes are on the BJP as it prepares to take charge. The party’s ability to select the right leader and deliver on its promises will determine its success in governing Delhi. As the countdown begins, the people of Delhi await a new era of leadership and development.
