TRAI's New Regulation: Relief from Spam Calls is on the Horizon

Are you fed up with incessant spam calls? Relief is on its way as the government prepares to introduce a groundbreaking regulation. Set to take effect from September 1, this new rule stipulates that SIM cards used for harassing calls and messages will be suspended for two years.

Starting September 1, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will implement this regulation as part of its ongoing efforts to combat fraudulent and spam communications. The Telecom Department has provided an update via its official X handle, detailing TRAI's latest decisions. This initiative aims to significantly reduce unwanted calls, with directives issued to telecom companies to ensure compliance.

For some time, the government has been striving to curtail fraud through unwanted calls within the telecom sector. TRAI's new regulation, effective September 1, 2024, reflects this commitment, with clear instructions given to telecom providers across the nation.

Overview of the New Rules

As outlined in TRAI's report, personal mobile numbers used for telemarketing will face a two-year blacklist if misused. To address this issue, the government has introduced a new mobile number series specifically for telemarketing purposes. The Department of Telecommunications has launched a new 160 number series designed to curb financial fraud. Consequently, the banking and insurance sectors will be required to conduct promotional activities exclusively through this new series. On August 8, TRAI convened with telemarketers and telecom service providers, including Airtel, Jio, BSNL, Vi, and MTNL, to issue guidelines on marketing calls and messages.

Say Goodbye to Unwanted Calls and Messages

With the new rule in place, you can expect a significant reduction in unwanted calls and messages. The regulation also covers automated and robotic calls. Thanks to TRAI's proactive measures, the prevalence of such intrusive communications will be greatly diminished.
